Vegan Mezze Dishes
Once you’ve handled the dips and salads (recipes found here), it’s time to move on to the next portion of the vegan Mezze: fruit, vegetables, and nuts!
Grilled Figs
There’s just something indulgent about digging into a delicate bite of flavorful, grilled fruit. Sweet without being overpowering, warm, and toasty, these grilled figs are sure to stun even the pickiest of guests.
Preparing these morsels is simple. Start by cutting each fig in half. Then, place each fig soft-side down against a preheated grill. The goal here is not to cook the figs so much as it is to warm them and add an attractive char. After about five minutes, remove the figs from the heat and arrange them on a decorative plate.
Just before serving, add a drizzle of balsamic oil, honey, or both. A pinch of kosher salt adds the finishing touch, adding a slightly crunchy texture and highlighting the natural sweetness.
Toasted Walnuts
If this addition sounds overly simple, think again. Toasted walnuts are a fabulous addition to any vegan mezze, providing a burst of nutritional goodness and flavor.
It doesn’t take much to reap the benefits! Just seven walnuts are enough to gain nearly five grams of protein, as well as a variety of minerals and healthy fats. Not only are these tiny treats filled with immune-boosting vitamins, but they easily fit into a heart-healthy and cancer-preventative diet.
Best of all, their presence allows guests the chance to personalize their dish, using this as a topping for other available fruits, dips, or salads! Just be sure to check if anyone in your crowd has a nut allergy.
Roasted Veggies
Just as every mezze assortment needs a fruit, so does it need some savory, roasted veggies.
In keeping with the healthy Mediterranean theme of this plate, we suggest taking advantage of eggplant, zucchini, and tomatoes for this addition.
Though spongy when raw, roasted eggplant takes on a rich, almost creamy texture. The smokey flavor pairs perfectly with Greek seasonings, making it the perfect place to practice using garlic, onion powder, oregano, and dill.
Even cooked, zucchini maintains a mild, slightly sweet texture. We suggest only lightly cooking this addition, allowing it to serve as a “boat” for guests to slather in flavorful dips.
In contrast to the milder flavor of the other veggies, the sharp, savory flavor of roasted tomatoes is enough all on its own! A simple sprinkle of salt and pepper is all that’s necessary to highlight the naturally delicious flavor.
Memorable Mezze with City Roots
When it comes to international flavor, no one does vegan cuisine quite like the geniuses at City Roots Hospitality.
Our chefs start with a simple premise: vegan food should be good for your body, good for the planet, and creative enough to awe even the strictest carnivores. Every dish on our vast menu– whether a classic or something completely original– comes with a hint of City Roots flair, and our Mezze presentation is no different.
As part of our Mediterranean Mezze station, guests will have the opportunity to choose from an assortment of dips and delicacies, sampling flavors they never knew could come from fully vegan cuisine! Awe them with options like:
- Our beluga lentil salad, topped with roasted red peppers and salty, brined capers
